RARE BOOK’S NEW EDITION THROWS
LIFELINE TO MOURNERS EVERYWHERE
Teachings Bring Profound Illumination to Prophecy about Jesus and His Mission
The Mourner’s Comforter by a
renowned 19th century hero of Christian faith, Charles
H. Spurgeon, can once again reach Christians around the
world due to its re-release by Opine Books. The new
edition contains the seven original discourses on Isaiah
61:1-3. Jesus read from the passage to announce his
work: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because he
hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he
hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
deliverance….” The Mourner’s Comforter closely examines
the full text.
Not many years after the first
edition’s release (1878), The Mourner’s Comforter was
out of print. A rare copy was in Mr. Spurgeon’s personal
library, sold after his death. Yet, no one could borrow
it to read or study. In the 1950s, a book finder in
England found a first edition copy for Mr. G. C. Primm,
a pastor in North Carolina, USA. In 1975, Mr. Primm’s
Gateway Publications released a reprint, of which over
4,000 copies sold in the USA and England, Mr. Spurgeon’s
home country. Again, The Mourner’s Comforter was out of
print.
In 2004,Opine Books, Columbia,
Maryland, prepared to issue a new edition, based on the
original. Mr. Primm, editor of a 1990s Spurgeon
collection, wrote acknowledgements and asked author Jane
Bullard, of the Opine Books team, to write a foreword.
As the Opine edition advanced for 2007 printing, William
Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, sold Mr. Spurgeon’s
library to Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in
Kansas City—unrelated events except in the timing of
renewed interest in the complete works of Mr. Spurgeon.
Opine Books hopes that the book will
be reviewed, studied, and used by individuals,
seminaries, Bible schools, and churches. The Watchman
calls The Mourner’s Comforter “a book for ministers and
ministering, one meant for souls in need of spiritual
relief, one that also serves to help those who need
comfort in grief…. The author provides help for the
downcast, a numerous group today…”(June 2007, page 19,
Gastonia, North Carolina). A pastoral ministry professor
wrote the publisher to say: “The introductory matter
alone is a contribution in its precision. I look forward
to exploring the volume further. Spurgeon’s ability to
speak to a breadth of issues with deft clarity is
exemplary.”
The publisher emphasizes the value of
The Mourner’s Comforter by C. H. Spurgeon as an
outstanding classic containing vast spiritual
resources—and therefore a must-read—for those who seek,
preach, and teach, as well as counselors and friends of
people who are going through especially difficult times.
